 Caregivers

As a caregiver, you can provide an invaluable gift to another person – good oral health.
A healthy mouth can prevent dental disease and contribute to the general health in many other areas of the body. Using preventative methods like Zellies Complete Mouth Care System not only rids the mouth of harmful plaque bacteria, but it can also help prevent ear infections and acid reflux.

Zellies Complete Mouth Care System

Most people brush their teeth, some floss, and some use mouthwash to care for their teeth. However, despite this effort, many may continue to experience cavities, gum disease, bad breath, tooth sensitivity, and soft teeth. The Zellies Complete Mouth Care System uses a series of over-the-counter, well-recognized rinses first thing in the morning and before bed. During the day, xylitol is used to balance damaging mouth acidity and prevent the build-up of plaque bacteria.

The first step in the system is to rinse with CloSYS™, which protects teeth and loosens foreign particles. Then brush with regular Crest® toothpaste. After brushing teeth, rinse mouth with LISTERINE® Antiseptic to kill any remaining bacteria and prepare teeth for the final rinse. The final rinse is with ACT® Fluoride Rinse, which helps to strengthen teeth and make them more resistant to damaging acids. The fluoride in the ACT® Fluoride Rinse should be the last thing on teeth, so a residue can remain overnight to help remineralize and strengthen them.

During the day, xylitol should be consumed, sprayed into the mouth, taken as a drink or wiped onto teeth after every meal and snack or drink. Xylitol will neutralize mouth acidity and help to eliminate sticky plaque bacteria. It works to strengthen teeth, increase salivary flow, and eliminate bad breath.

Alternative Mouth Care Methods

If using the Zellies Complete Mouth Care System is not possible, focus on ways to protect teeth from mouth acidity and dryness as much as possible. Xylitol can be sprayed in the mouth, wiped on teeth and gums, or mixed with water and applied as a solution to teeth or used as a “tooth wash” after meals.

Try to ensure at least 6 grams of xylitol are applied or consumed each day. Benefits are maximized when this amount is divided into five or six separate doses throughout the day. Maximum effect is obtained by applying xylitol to teeth at the end of each meal or after drinks or snacks. The application form is not important – you can mix the various forms of xylitol to suit your needs.

If the patient is not able to safely consume mints or gum, there are alternative options for application:

1. Dissolve adhesive, slow-dissolving xylitol pellets in the mouth – Xylimelt

2. Add granular xylitol to the diet and supplement with a spray or wipe:

  • The mouth could be sprayed or wiped with xylitol at the end of the meal, snack or drink.
  • Two grams of xylitol may be added into a breakfast meal or drink.
  • Water with two ounces of xylitol dissolved in it may be used as a refreshing drink during the day
  • Two grams of xylitol could be added to fruit puree or custard at lunch or dinner time.
  • This would provide a 6 gram dose of xylitol, to be supplemented with xylitol mints or gum after meals for maximum benefit.
  • While it is safe and healthy to add xylitol to drinks and food, using it in this way limits the strengthening and healing benefits found if xylitol is the last thing in the mouth after meals.
