The use of xylitol to promote better oral health was approved by the FDA in the 1960s and endorsed by the World Congress of Minimally Invasive Dentistry. The American Dental Association released a study showing xylitol-sweetened gum is noncariogenic and that mothers who chew xylitol-sweetened gum do not pass on to their children the bacteria that cause tooth decay.  The study concluded that the use of xylitol-sweetened gum can prevent caries and should be “promoted as a public-health preventive measure.”
