From the infant stage to the golden age, everyone’s vulnerable to dental disease
Everyone is at risk for dental disease, some more than others. Certain groups are more susceptible because of specific conditions known as
risk factors. The more you’re at risk, the more you will benefit from xylitol and oral care procedures that stimulate the natural healing of teeth.
Dry Mouth and Mouth Acidity
People suffering from acid reflux, GERD, allergies, sinus
problems, nasal blockage, or those with salivary malfunctions like
Sjogren’s syndrome have higher mouth acidity and dry mouths. Some of
these problems require open mouth breathing which dries out the
mouth very quickly. Other conditions expose the mouth to stomach
acids or post nasal drip which increases mouth acidity levels.
Patients taking medications with mouth-drying side effects should
counteract them with xylitol to maintain proper salivary flow.
Athletes
Athletes are at higher risk for cavities and dental damage
because they spend hours dehydrated, often breathing heavily through
a dry, acidic mouth.
Sports drinks, fruited herbal teas and juices used to rehydrate
contain citric acid, which will cause increased mouth acidity.
Carbohydrates feed acid-producing, tooth-damaging bacteria, giving
them energy to grow, multiply and produce acids.
Xylitol protection
Using xylitol gum or mints before and during exercise or any
other dry mouth situation stimulates saliva flow, which helps to
wash away and neutralize mouth acidity, and rids the mouth of
acid-producing plaque.
